Many facilities still rely on legacy spreadsheets to manage their emissions data, but this approach comes with hidden risks. Spreadsheets accumulate errors over time — broken formulas, outdated emission factors, incorrect unit conversions, or accidental overwrites that go unnoticed until reporting season. Even worse, much of the “how” behind the calculations lives in the head of one person. When that employee leaves or changes roles, institutional knowledge disappears with them. What’s left behind is a patchwork of files, inconsistent naming conventions, and uncertainty about which version is correct. This creates stress, slows down reporting, and increases the risk of inaccuracies that can lead to regulatory issues.
Increasingly, companies are choosing to deploy environmental compliance software to reduce reporting burden and errors. Enterprises find that these software reduce the time employees spend on reporting, freeing them up for more high-value activities. It also preserves institutional knowledge despite staffing changes. Corporate teams can easily surface data, compare sites, and track timelines without needing to schedule daily check-ins.

This considerable growth highlights not only opportunities for investors, but underscores the impact AI will have on the environmental field in the coming decade.
